Off The Shelf Art

One of my earliest memories as a child is sitting down for hours at a time at the kitchen table painting, drawing, and cross-stitching. My artwork as a child was nothing short of a humorous attempt to be seen as an artist, and I wish I could tell you that I improved more and more throughout my adolescence and early adulthood until reaching the apex of artistic mastery! On the contrary ā€“ my artwork remains mediocre, goofy, and bizzare. There is one thing that my artwork does well, however. It says who I am, what Iā€™m all about, what I want in life - loud and clear. It communicates my childlike wonder, my perseverance in life, my light and dark sides, and my passions. To me, that is what art is about. It is what makes expressing yourself through art worthwhile and meaningful. It is what harnesses the attention of others. It is because of these reasons, rather than measuring up to the status of an expert artist, that I continue art. Art nourishes me. In my mind, I am good at art because art is good to me.
Throughout my 27 years of life, I have taken numerous art courses ā€“ both at school (high school and college) and privately. As an adult, I oversaw weekly art groups for a youth homeless shelter. During this time, I witnessed some incredible things. I was able to see first-hand how art transformed the lives of these youth, even if it was just for that hour of time. I was even able to connect some of our youth with local businesses who were willing to sell their art in their stores. The youth would collect a percentage of the profit from any sales made. For them, this opportunity was often a driving force in developing a sense of self-worth and self-love.
